Open Source developers aren’t free or cheap either

Joomla! CMS WordpressDrupal CMS

Just heard from a friend that a client looking for a “Joomla Expert” hung up on them after hearing their rates. Apparently some people still think that just because they can go and download a free copy of Joomla, Drupal, or Wordpress that means any service provided in that domain should be cheap or free as well.

Reality is that Free in open source mostly refers to freedom to read and change the code to make it suit your project goals.

Half A Million Windows Server Powered Sites Hit With SQL Injection

Here is the article on the Wired Magazine:

Massive Attack: Half A Million Microsoft-Powered Sites Hit With SQL Injection

A new SQL injection attack aimed at Microsoft IIS web servers has hit some 500,000 websites, including the United Nations, UK Government sites and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. While the attack is not necessarily Microsoft’s fault, it is unique to the company’s IIS server.

This is also including the department of homeland security!

Of course this method of attack could happen to any insecure web application whether it is using Windows or other platforms, but I think the Hackers are sending a message here:

That many web application developers who use proprietary platforms such as Microsoft SQL Database or servers aren’t doing a good job building secure systems! Could it be because in the proprietary world, developer’s don’t get to read other developers’ code in order to enhance their level of knowledge and skills and instead rely mostly on the training they receive from certificate programs and the school system?

Or could it be that in the proprietary world the source code of an application never gets to be reviewed by the community of developers, otherwise the security bugs would have been shallowed given all the eyeballs that are scanning the code over and over again?

Joomla! 1.5 is a Content Management Framework (CMS)

Zend is a PHP class Library

Symfony and Ruby on Rails are Web Application Frameworks extendible by the Developers.

Joomla! CMS version 1.5 or later is a Content Management Framework (CMF) which is extendible by both the Developers and the Users.

You noticed the evolution pattern?

How does diversity bring more security?

Imagine a neighborhood where all the door locks come from the same manufacturer. Once the bad guys learn how to break one lock, they’ll be able to break every lock in that neighborhood. (Hey that looks like most condos in Vancouver!)

Now if half of those locks came from two different manufacturers, that means the thieves have to learn two different ways to break those locks. Now imagine if different door locks were using five, six, or seven different technologies, eventually it would be much more difficult for the thieves to rob the entire neighborhood, even though they could still cause partial damage. Partial damage is always better than having the entire neighborhood exposed to the break-in threats.

The same analogy can be used in other ways, for example houses come in different shapes and forms so thieves have to come up with different plans or use different types of ladders to climb up and break-into those houses. Using different material to build houses possibly introduces further challenges too.

Generate Joomla! 1.5 MVC the Ruby on Rails style

Joomla! CMSJoomla! CMS

One of the great features about the Ruby on Rails Model View Controller (MVC) architecture is the concept of generators which can quickly create the mvc layers.

The Joomla! 1.5 framework is now using an MVC by choice architectre, however the generators are still missing. Joomla! 1.5 is no-longer just a Content Management System, it is a great framework for building all kinds of web applications with a CMS edge.

My friend and business associate Arash from PeerGlobe technology has written an awesome tutorial to help you Build Joomla! MVCs the Ruby on Rails Style.

The flexible UI - What happenend at the Vancouver Adobe AIR workshop?

The Vancouver Adobe AIR Workshop actually happened on last Wednesday, but I didn’t get the chance to write about it, because I was too busy organizing the Vancouver Joomla DocCamp event. I know this is bad journalism practice, but better late than never. Adobe AIR workshop was in fact organized by our associate Ash Sanieyan from the PeerGlobe Technology and rmd Studio and Tazzu were two of the sponsors in this event. This event was held at the Network Hub and about 20 developers had shown up.
